The global colour authority revealed that the shade will take the crown from Radiant Orchid, which was the 2014 colour of the year.

Marsala was a popular choice on the spring 15 catwalks with Daniel Silverstain, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, and Dennis Basso, incorporating the hue into their collections.

The impactful shade can make an elegant statement when used as a block colour but is also a great accent when paired with other shades such as amber, golden yellow, green, turquoise and teal. Marsala is also a top choice for jewellery, handbags, hats and footwear.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute said: “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while it’s grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

Pantone has been naming colours of the year for the past 15 years. Previous colours have included emerald, tangerine tango and honeysuckle.
