At the start of this year a new name emerged in bridal, Number 18, that is the result of the shared passion of mother and daughter team, Lynne and Jess. With a background in advertising and design, retail and  fashion, the duo felt that were perfectly positioned to create a collection of collections with a quirky approach. There are now three ranges in the portfolio, Jane Grant at Number 18, which is bridal, Bridesmaids at Number 18 for fashion-forward maids, and Vintage Number 18, which is precisely what the name implies.

At Harrogate, the company showed 14 vintage-inspired wedding dresses and 16 bridesmaids’ dresses many of which are based on original pieces, dating from the 1930s to the 1960s, that were carried in its Newcastle Upon Tyne boutique.

Says Lynne: “We believe the dress chooses the bride; we love it when we see those beams of happiness when ‘the one’ has been found. And now, in our very first season selling into retailers, we are looking for stockists with the same ethos as ourselves. We can produce a range to suit their boutique and their budget – we know how important it is today to offer product that has its own personality and can be customized to meet retailer and consumer needs and tastes.”

With production firmly here in the UK, and fabrics and trimmings sourced – where possible – from domestic suppliers, Number 18 offers lace, satin, duchess satin, satin back dupion. “Brides are mainly asking for sleeves whether are cap sleeves or full length,” says Lynne. “And they are particularly interested in lace right now.”

The basic Number 18 size range goes from 6 to 22, but other requests can be met; RRPs are £800-£1,200 for wedding gowns and £225-250 for bridesmaid’s dresses and there are no minimums.
