When music legend, outspoken feminist and eternal Spice Girl Mel B married this weekend, she did it in true Scary Spice style. She was bold, unapologetic and unforgettable. Her custom bridal gown, designed by Josephine Scott, struck the perfect balance between regal drama and modern sensuality. With over 5,000 pearls, a sweeping cathedral train, and a detachable couture jacket, the look was as powerful as the woman wearing it.

We spoke to Josephine about how the dress came to life and how she captured Mel’s spirit in every stitch…

Girl Power, but Make It Couture

Q: What was the initial inspiration behind Mel B’s gown?


A: Mel wanted something that embodied power, sensuality, and elegance – a gown that truly represented her. For me, it was about fusing her fearless spirit with softness and grace, and designing a look that would hold its own in the grand setting of St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Q: How did you translate her vision of strength, sensuality and timeless glamour into the fabric and silhouette?


A: The strength came through the sculpted corsetry and clean architectural lines. Sensuality came in the way the draping hugged her silhouette and enhanced her curves. The glamour? That was all in the detailing, from the pearl-embellished jacket to the sweeping cathedral train.

Q: Can you walk us through your choice of luxury georgette crepe and how it suited the gown’s sculpted corset bodice?


A: Georgette crepe was perfect because it offers structure and fluidity; a rare combination. It allowed us to sculpt the bodice cleanly while still creating that beautiful, soft drape that moved so gracefully down the aisle.

Two Become One

Q: The dress featured a detachable jacket, what inspired that detail, and how did it affect the gown’s overall flow?


A: The detachable jacket was designed to give two looks in one – it added modesty and high-fashion drama for the cathedral ceremony, while allowing Mel to reveal the strapless silhouette later. It made the gown feel versatile and transformative.

Q: There was so much detail! How many pearls were used, and what was the time investment for that detail?


A: Over 5,000 pearls and beads were individually applied across the illusion jacket and veil. It was an intense labour of love – hours and hours of handwork to create a ‘constellation’ effect that sparkled as she moved.

Q: What special techniques or tailoring were required to ensure the corset was just right?


A: We used traditional corsetry techniques – boning, inner structure, and precision draping – but softened the look with hand-finished seams and light padding for comfort. Everything was engineered to contour and support without compromising ease of movement.

Viva Forever Moments

Q: How did you balance designing something regal enough for St Paul’s Cathedral with Mel’s personal style and comfort?


A: That balance was key. The regal element came through in the drama of the train, the high neckline, and the veil. Mel’s style is bold and unapologetic, so the body-contouring silhouette and exposed shoulders gave it her signature edge, without ever feeling overdone, yet appropriate for the cathedral.

Q: The gown was made in collaboration with Evelie Bridal – how did that partnership enhance the design and fitting process?


A: Evelie Bridal played a pivotal role in the journey. Mel initially reached out to them in search of her dream dress, and as a new AVENUE stockist, they selected a curated edit of our gowns for her first fitting. Their team created a trusted, supportive space for Mel to explore different styles – and once she gravitated towards one of our designs, I was invited to meet her and reimagine it as a fully bespoke piece. From there, I offered sketches and ideas to make it uniquely hers. I proposed a modern, couture-style cover-up to complement the grandeur of St. Paul’s while staying true to Mel’s bold personality. Evelie’s team – especially their seamstresses – handled all the fittings beautifully. They truly understood the bride-designer dynamic and ensured every detail was executed to perfection, right down to the final hand stitch.

Q: What are your favourite elements of the dress?


A: The detachable pearl jacket; it elevated the entire look and felt so iconic. And the way the train moved – it had such presence. But most of all, it was seeing Mel in it, absolutely radiant. That moment will stay with me forever.
