Let’s not mince our words… the British weather hasn’t been ideal so far in 2024. Couple’s set to wed over the next few months are, understandably, putting plans in place to protect them from the rain. Many other’s are feeling happy and confident to take their special day overseas, to somewhere where sunny days don’t feel quite so few and far between. Because of this year’s poor climate, it’s inevitable that more and more couples will choose to book a destination ‘I do.’ According to travel website Holiday Best, 25% of British couples are already choosing to get married abroad. So, with this year’s weather in the UK, that figure will probably see an increase. 

Through 2024/2025 more and more nearly-weds will be seeking unique, climate-appropriate styles to ensure they look stunning while staying comfortable in hot weather. So, for retailers, it’s really important to understand the emerging trends that cater for this growing market segment. Here’s a look at the latest styles and considerations for destination dressing.

Easy options

Lightweight, easy-to-wear styles will be in demand. In terms of fabric, crepe is versatile and breathable, while chiffon is a wonderful fabric that is sheer with a loose, plain weave. This openness allows airflow, which is great for quick drying and preventing wrinkles. Also organza, tulle and silk should be favoured for their breathability and elegant drape. Fabrics like Mikado are truly stunning, but as a heavier material, it should be avoided for warm days or extended time outside due to the heaviness.

For destination affairs, minimalist designs are trending, characterised by clean lines, simple silhouettes, and understated elegance. In addition, boho styles are always a perfect match for wedding days in sunny settings, brides love the opportunity for something with a relaxed fit, pretty lace details, and flowing skirts. While white remains a classic choice, many brides are embracing bold colours and patterns that reflect their personalities and the vibrant locales of their weddings. Shades like blush, champagne, and even pastel blues or greens are making their way into bridal fashion, along with colourful floral patterns.

Add to this the trend for detachables, which are a clever choice for destination brides. Convertible dresses, which can be transformed from long to short or adjusted in style, will allow brides to have different looks for the ceremony and reception without needing multiple dresses. Which is as appealing for an overseas affair is it is here in the UK.

Styles we love 

The Virgile dress from Cymbeline’s Pour Un Oui line is a dreamy dress for a destination wedding. We adore the boho style, with the lightweight and translucent  fabrics, matched with a deep-v neckline, flowing bell sleeves and a full skirt.

A really pretty take on sleek styling, Romantica’s Leni dress is a chic gown crafted in crepe. The sweetheart neckline adds a pretty touch, and the beaded sleeves add a wonderful touch of texture and sparkle.

The unique detailing to the bodice and sleeves is really head turning – this is an elegant look that we can imagine looking dreamy in the European countryside or at a vineyard setting. 

Short styles shouldn’t be overlooked – in fact, it would be impossible to overlook them given the resurgence in shorter styles over the last 12 months. We adore the Parker from Elbeth Gillis. It has a half-moon neckline and full mini skirt, which gives it an almost skater style silhouette. Plus, it comes with a detachable oversize bow in fine organza.
