Based in Australia, her designs feel considered and personal – which she credits to the first hand contact she has with brides at her atelier in East Brisbane. The Wendy Makin core Ready To Wear collection emerged as a reflection of the designer’s couture collection, which celebrates clean, simple and minimal silhouettes. “It’s a blend of contemporary clean lines and classic styling with versatility that can be built upon and endlessly styled by brides,” says the fashion house’s James Morton. “It’s a collection where a cloud of satin organza sits alongside striking structured Mikado lines, while interchangeable separates and one-pieces give brides an opportunity to create a one off look that truly reflects their style.” 

Wendy Makin: Style of the Week

From the RTW collection, or Style of the Week is the stunning Audrina. The dress itself is feels timeless, but also has a sense of freshness that’s really appealing – it strikes the perfect balance, which is exactly what Wendy Makin is known for. 

The full A-line skirt has a gorgeous – and very on trend – leg split, giving that touch of sensuality. The classic strapless bodice is given a gorgeous point of difference thanks to the one-shoulder cuff, which forms a unique asymmetrical bow at the back. “We absolutely love Audrina’s flirtatious leg split. It adds a sense of fun and sass to this classic skirt,” says James. “It’s a playful element that contrasts beautifully with the gown’s elegant silhouette, it makes a statement while maintaining its sophistication.”

Wendy Makin’ has given Audrina a gorgeous structure and drape, which is emphasised by the clever fabric selection – it’s made from Mikado. “We chose Mikado because it gives the dress a beautifully clean and simple look, and allows the structured finish that’s essential to its design,” explains James. “The lines and cut of Audrina are key to the look, and Mikado holds its shape perfectly, allowing us to achieve that striking silhouette. Mikado not only looks stunning but also ensures the gown maintains its structured appearance throughout the day.” 

Design inspiration 

Wendy Makin’s inspiration for Audrina’s design came from a desire to craft a contemporary based on a classic strapless bodice and A-line silhouette. “She wanted to create a dress that was both striking and powerful, yet still retained elegance and softness,” explains James. By integrating asymmetry through a one-shouldered cuff, Wendy has modernised the traditional style, balancing power and elegance with a sense of light. This approach exemplifies Wendy’s commitment to blending classic and modern elements while maintaining simplicity, a hallmark of her design philosophy.

The dress embraces that sense of modern minimalism though the clean lines and unadorned finish.
