We take a closer look at who’s in the running for the British Bridalwear Designer of the Year 2018…

In terms of bridal design, the UK’s home-grown talent is second to none. Great Britain has some of the most talented, creative and inspiring designers in the world. This year there are six big names in the running for the accolade of British Bridalwear Designer of the Year at the Bridal Buyer Awards 2018.

If you’re heading to Harrogate, make sure you go to the BBSA Sunday Night Party for great networking opportunities and much more.

The luminous collections that we’ve seen over the past 12 months highlight the skill of these national treasures. Here’s a peek at why we fell in love with these creative names this year…

Stephanie Allin

Stephanie Allin designs for brides that want an ultra-pretty look with a contemporary twist. Perfect for festival weddings, and grown-up boho styles, Stephanie’s gowns are ultra-feminine, with soft silks, textured laces and some on-trend separates.

The styles are very flattering, and give a detailed modern twist to some well-loved classic silhouettes. On her brand, she says: “It started off with five dresses in the back of my car and a trip to Harrods to meet the buyers back in 1991 - little did I know that it would bring me here today.”

Charlie Brear

Charlie Brear knows how to make a show-stopping gown for brides who want something cool and effortlessly chic. The collection is stocked in 60 boutiques and has attracted a cult following from spirited and modern brides.

Founded in 2005 as The Vintage Wedding Company, since 2013 the label bears the eponymous name of its founder. The brand has two bridal collections a year in harmony with Additions, a permanent range of skirts, sashes and sleeves designed to help brides create a bespoke look.

David Fielden

This is a designer that others in the field truly admire. His style is modern and eclectic, using a range of interesting materials, dynamic cuts and some gorgeous details. Next year will see the brand celebrate its 40th year in business; David is currently enjoying having mothers who got married in his designs return with their daughters for their own wedding day.

When asked about the award, David said: “It would be wonderful recognition for my 40 years of making many brides happy!”

Suzanne Neville

Suzanne Neville has been a leading name in bridal and fashion for the last 28 years; she’s known for creating gowns with a real wow factor. Suzanne’s designs are modern without being pretentious; her latest collection embraces the dramatic glamour that we have come to know and love from this brand, while offering up pieces that genuinely endure.

Suzanne is known for her craftsmanship - each of her gowns are hand cut and her dresses show off an incredible display of shapes, fabrics and creative design.

Sassi Holford

Reflecting the modern bride, Sassi’s ethos is to define effortless style through cut and quality; she designs for the woman who owns understatement. Discussing the award, she says: “Because it is voted for by the industry and peers it makes it extra special to be nominated as a finalist.”

Sassi has been in bridal for 37 years, but when asked about her time in the industry she jokes: “I’ve been in bridal so long that people expect me to be 90 when they meet me!” Her latest collection remains true to her style - celebrating the female form and enhancing the bride’s unique individuality.

Ian Stuart

Now famous for his hilarious new TV show (The Posh Frock Shop on Channel 4), Ian is a really creative designer who’s loved by his peers and the public alike. Ian launched his eponymous label in 2002 and went on to open his flagship store in 2014, which houses his exclusive collections.

Check out our review of Ian’s TV show, The Posh Frock Shop, here.

Ian describes his style as theatrical, quirky and recognisable - and we thoroughly agree. On being shortlisted for the award, Ian said: “It is always such an honour to be recognised for your craft. It would be truly amazing and fabulous to win.”
