Sophia Tolli is a renowned Australian bridal label that was created by Sophia Apostolides. Back in 2007, the label was added to the Mon Cheri Bridals portfolio and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

Can you tell us about your personal background?

I grew up surrounded by fashion, my family were always interested in it and they felt that what they wore said a lot about who they were. I was influenced by this from a young age and I began to sketch and imagine clothes that I wanted to create for myself.

I always knew that I wanted to become a fashion designer, however designing bridal wear came to me some years later whilst I was doing my tertiary education and training. It seemed to me that any amount of time spent on a wedding dress was always worth it.

I began my career in bespoke bridal wear, before moving to ready-to-wear and then starting my own label.

What are your secrets to success?

Many things have to come together to make a dream a successful reality. I have a real love and passion for what I do, but to be successful you must also be willing to work hard. The two go hand-in-hand and if you want to succeed you need to be aware of that.

I also feel that you need to be honest with yourself about everything, including your strengths and weaknesses. For me, an important thing that has also contributed to my success is my genuine interest in people, which means I can connect honestly and respectfully with them.

What is the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Many years ago, I was advised that you need a clear business plan and that you cannot do it on your own, no matter how dedicated or talented you are. You need to build a strong support network around you, people who share the same vision as you, and who can help you reach your business goals.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

Making people happy with my designs and helping to fulfil their dreams of looking and feeling their best on their wedding day. This is still so rewarding for me, even after 20 years in the business. Another favourite part of my job is immersing myself in the most beautiful laces and trims and imagining what I can create with them. I don’t think I will ever tire of this!

What does a typical working day look like?

A typical working day can vary. I travel so much for work that I am away from home for more than three months out of every year. If I’m not travelling, I try to get up early to squeeze in a walk or some Pilates before I get the kids ready for school.

Once I get to my studio, I touch base with my team and get on with my own business, depending on what part of the season we are in. You’ll often find me sketching, selecting laces and fabrics or working with my designs directly on a mannequin.

What is your favourite ever design that you’ve created?

It’s too hard to choose just one, but the first design that comes to mind is a gown called Nightingale. It was a soft, powdery grey gown that had a signature draped bodice with a soft tulle skirt. It was dreamy and beautiful and the colour made it unique. However, Prinia was also a favourite with beautiful layers of lace and beading throughout.

Can you tell us about the new collection?

I’m so excited about the Spring 2020 collection and I cannot wait to show it to my customers. It has a modern feel, very fresh and new, but true to my signature style. I’m always inspired by nature and this collection showcases this in all its beauty.

There is a natural flow to each gown and intricate attention to the small details that elevate each dress. From simple styles that are chic and elegant to gowns that glitter and sparkle, the collection celebrates all the beautiful brides that today’s modern women want to be.

Where do you see the bridal industry in 5 years’ time?

It’s hard to say. It seems some people can get a little pessimistic about the future of the bridal industry these days, but I choose to believe that things ebb and flow and there will be a fresh, renewed interest in all things bridal - including the dress!

After all, this special day represents a celebration of love and that will never go away. I feel the day, and the dress will remain important for many brides, for many years to come.

If you could be remembered for one thing what would it be?

It would be wonderful to be remembered for how amazing my gowns looked on women and how beautiful it made them feel.

Sophia Tolli will be exhibiting at The Harrogate Bridal Show 2019 alongside the other Mon Cheri brands. Make sure you register for the event here so you don’t miss out.
