Clare Waight Keller, Creative Director at Givenchy, created Meghan Markle’s elegant and simple bridal gown. With great speculation surrounding the dress Meghan would choose, Clare managed to keep the five-month-long design process quiet from everyone – including husband, who only found out on the morning of the wedding that his wife had designed the Duchess of Sussex’s dress.

Kensington Palace released the dress and veil sketches on their Twitter account soon after the big day. "The Duchess and Ms Waight Keller worked closely together on the design, epitomising a timeless minimal elegance referencing the codes of the iconic House of Givenchy," Kensington Palace explained in the statement.

The statement continued to explain how the carefully designed 15 ft. floral veil included representations from all 53 countries of the Commonwealth. The veil also included two flowers of sentimental value to the couple – the California poppy, from where Meghan was born, and the Wintersweet, which is found in Kensington Palace.

Ms Waight Keller explains that “it was an extraordinary moment” when Meghan chose her to design her dress. Clare explained the reasons behind Meghan’s choice: "I think she loved the fact that I was a British designer, and working in a house such as Givenchy which has its roots in a very classical, beautiful style."
