It’s important to be aware of what is set to be on trend for the year ahead as this will help you buy stock that will prove to be popular, and also help to define you and your boutique as fashion forward. Bridal trends are slow to change, so if you buy into something now, it’ll continue to be popular for a long while. We asked some key industry figures what trends they thought would be big for the year ahead…

1. 1970s Revival

“Vintage has had its day, but the 1970s have definitely been revived, and we’re seeing lots of bell sleeves, higher necklines and off-the-shoulder styles for those festival-loving brides,” reveals Karen Whybro of Rock the Frock.

2. Mix and Match Bridesmaids

“The mix and match bridesmaid trend will be big, with bridesmaids dressed in different colours or styles to suit the individual. Keeping to the same or a tonal colour palette, or bringing the look together with similar embellishment details will keep the bridal party looking in sync, and each maid happy,” says Rosanna Garden of Motee Maids.

3. Fun Fabrics

“Graphic lace and bohemian silhouettes wrap brides in 2018, ruffles add an air of breeziness and vintage inspiration to the look. Tulle, lace, chiffon and satin are mixed with transparency, net and stretchy fabrics to illuminate the feminine figure and transform the bride, giving her a stunning appearance,” explains Anne Kathrine Rantzau of Lilly.

4. Architectural Inspiration

“We are showing architectural seaming with embroidery and beaded embellishments. Soft pastel colours, crepe and Mikado and soft construction will also be popular,” says Justin Warshaw of Justin Alexander.

5. Luxe Fabrics

“Fabric trends include silks for draping, layering, pleating and creating volume. Incorporating contrasting fabrics in the new season’s designs is also on trend, Pongees will be offering crisp structural tulles and organzas that will add drama to luxurious, lustrous satins and marocains,” reveals Nick Moore of Pongees

6. 3D Details

“Off-the-shoulder sleeves and 3D floral embellishments or touches of heavy beading are very in. Brides are still enjoying two-pieces and detachable skirts accompanied often with soft lace cropped jackets. Emphasis on the back is increasingly popular and works to complement high coverage at the front,” suggests Immaculada Garcia, bridalwear designer.

7. Big Bows

“Giant bows aren’t going anywhere. Expect to see them featured on footwear, clutch bags and dresses. Retro styles, in particular shorter dresses teamed with statement footwear, are becoming popular again. With graphics, bright colour options and playful detailing,” explains Richard Marsh of Rainbow Club.
