When she was younger, Helen Henderson trained as a ballerina and took to making her own costumes. She fell in love with the process and, later, decided to study art and textiles. “Once I’d met my future husband, I realised the nearest thing to making costumes was wedding dresses,” Helen explains. “That’s where my passion for designing and making them came from, and Eternally Yours Bridalwear was born.”

Not just a bridal boutique where customers can browse over 200 beautiful gowns from big industry names, Eternally Yours invites brides to work with Helen to design their very own custom gown. Amazingly, the business has been a staple of the Nottinghamshire market town of Newark for more than 30 years.

During those three decades, Helen has won numerous awards and has served more than 3,000 brides. Then, in late 2025, she decided to relocate to an even bigger premises, marking the beginning of a new chapter. To celebrate this milestone, we caught up with Helen to find out what a typical day looks like for her and her team, as well as her approach to appointments, leadership and business development.

A Day In The Life

Eternally Yours Bridalwear is open six days a week, from 9am until 5pm Tuesday through Saturday, and on Mondays for special pre-booked appointments. “A typical day usually means arriving first thing in the morning,” Helen says. “Three of my staff will arrive at the same time and we’ll get the kettle on! Luckily, my staff know what they are going, so after a quick discussion of anything that needs clarifying for the day ahead, they all get on with it.”

Throughout the day, Helen will take the time to check in with each member of the team, while juggling her own all-important jobs. “I don’t usually have too much to do on the shop floor, as I leave that up to my extremely capable sales team,” she says. “My days usually consist of designing or sewing my brides’ bespoke dresses. But I love to pop downstairs and meet our brides, to keep that personal touch and rapport with the customers.”

Helen also personally carries out all of her brides’ fittings. “It’s not just for their piece of mind, but mine as well, as I’m a stickler for high quality work,” Helen says. “The last half an hour before we close, we have a quick debrief to make sure that there have been no problems and that everything has been communicated throughout the day. For example, making sure all orders have been placed and paper work has been completed.”

Appointment Approach

When it comes to appointments, Helen likes to give her brides plenty of time to enjoy their experience. “Our customers get a two-hour appointment, where they’re greeted with their choice of tea, coffee or prosecco,” says Helen. “We then have a brief chat, before helping the bride with the variety of gowns we have on offer. We will assist them with choosing which ones they would like to try on.”

Although brides don’t get exclusive use of the boutique, there are two private changing rooms that they can choose from. Then it’s time for the most exciting part – trying on the gowns! Helen stocks styles from iconic names, including Morilee, Rachel Allan and Veni Infantino. “Once the bride has chosen her perfect dress, they can have fun celebrating, by taking photos in our new and improved ‘yes’ area. It has its very own EYB queen thrown!”

When it comes to Helen’s bespoke brides, the process is similar. “Some brides struggle to find what they want during a bridal appointment,” Helen says. “They might like the top of one dress and the bottom of another, so I will book them in for a bespoke design session, to create them a design combining their chosen elements. Or they might know they want something completely unique and book in for a design with me from the very start.”

During the design appointments, Helen will work with the bride to craft the dress. “We look at different fabrics, laces and colour options,” Helen says. “I will sketch out the design and then take measurements. We book the bride in for a first fit, but a bespoke gown usually requires between six and 10 appointments, depending on how intricate the design is.” All dresses are made upstairs in the workroom, by Helen and her team of seamstresses.

Helen also stocks an array of accessories and offers mother of the bride and wedding guest outfits from Gino Cerrutti and Veromia. By branching out into these different areas, Helen ensures the boutique works harder, catering not just to the bride, but to everyone who’s part of their special day.

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

So, how does Helen approach teamwork? Well, she admits she has an amazing group of women working for her, including her Head Bridal Consultant, Chrissy, who has been at Eternally Yours for five years. “We have all become one big family,” she says. “All the staff here treat the shop as if it was their own business. They take great pride in working here, and in what they do.”

As well as daily check-in sessions and nightly debriefs, the team is also nurtured by Helen, from a development point of view. “We have monthly training, but I am always available if anyone has questions or needs advice. Training can be made more specific, too, depending on requirements, and I’m open to providing training whenever it’s needed,” Helen says. “We don’t get to enjoy as many days out as we’d like, but I do like a treat day! For example, I’ll order in pizza and cake, just to see my girls smile!”

Of course, we had to ask Helen what Nottinghamshire brides are loving right now – and we we’re surprised by her answer! “We’re finding that our brides are loving that classic elegant look, including satins and chiffons with slight hints of lace,” Helen tells us. “On the bespoke side of thing, I’m seeing a rise in structured bodices and big skirts. These are always a favourite with Eternally Yours brides!”
