Inclusive styling is about far more than offering extended sizes. We speak to Portrait by Bridal Collective about why fit always comes before size, and how boutiques can create confident, empowering appointments for everyone

Inclusive styling has become one of the most important conversations in bridal over the past decade, and rightly so. Every body is unique, and every bride deserves beautiful design, exceptional fit and the freedom to explore the styles they love. Equally, bridal consultants should feel just as confident styling a plus size bride as they do any other customer, approaching every appointment with expertise, openness and without preconceived ideas.
Bridal Collective’s Portrait collection was created with exactly that philosophy in mind. Rather than simply extending sizing, Portrait reimagines gowns from the Enzoani, ÉLYSÉE and PEN·LIV portfolios specifically for curve brides, combining thoughtful construction with contemporary design – and not forgetting exceptional fit.
We caught up with Bridal Collective’s Portrait team to discuss why fit matters more than size, how boutiques can build confidence during appointments, and why one simple piece of advice should guide every styling consultation: "Listen to how the bride feels in the dress before you look at how it fits."

How has the conversation around plus size bridal changed for you in recent years?
"The conversation has evolved beyond simply offering extended sizing. Today’s brides expect the same level of fashion, craftsmanship and choice regardless of dress size, and rightly so. They’re arriving with inspiration boards full of contemporary silhouettes, minimalist gowns, sculpted corsetry and modern lace - they’re shopping trends first, not categories."
"That’s exactly why Portrait is such an important part of the Bridal Collective portfolio. It brings the signature aesthetics of Enzoani, ÉLYSÉE and PEN·LIV into a dedicated size-inclusive collection, with every gown thoughtfully re-engineered from the inside out to provide exceptional fit, support and confidence, rather than simply grading up an existing design."
What are some of the biggest misconceptions consultants have when styling plus size brides?
"One of the biggest misconceptions is assuming every plus-size bride wants the same thing. There can sometimes be an instinct to reach for the same silhouettes or encourage brides to cover certain areas, but today’s plus-size bride is just as fashion-conscious as any other and she should have the freedom to explore all her options. The most successful appointments begin with listening rather than assuming. When consultants focus on understanding the individual instead of the dress size, they often introduce styles that surprise both themselves and the bride, and this is where the magic happens. Those unexpected "yes" moments often come from the gowns a bride never thought she’d choose."

Why is it important to focus on fit and proportion rather than dress size?
"Bridal sizing is simply a number and rarely reflects how a gown will look or feel on the body. Proportion is what creates balance, enhances a bride’s natural shape and allows a gown to complement her figure rather than compete with it. When a gown is correctly proportioned and expertly fitted, confidence naturally follows, regardless of the size on the label."
"It’s also why Portrait was developed differently. Rather than simply grading couture designs into larger sizes, each gown has been thoughtfully reimagined with bespoke tailoring and internal construction to contour, support and flatter curves beautifully."
Which silhouettes and necklines consistently work well and why?
"There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Structured A-lines remain incredibly popular because they create beautiful definition through the waist while offering effortless movement. Equally, fit-and-flare silhouettes continue to perform exceptionally well thanks to advances in construction that allow brides to embrace their curves with confidence."
"We’re also seeing growing demand for cleaner, minimalist gowns. Styles such as TORVI and TOVA are performing well both in-store and across social media, combining contemporary, minimalist styling with the thoughtful construction that Portrait is known for."
"Square necklines and soft scoop necks continue to define modern bridalwear, offering a contemporary, fashion-forward aesthetic while providing beautiful balance, structure and support. Advances in internal construction mean that strapless gowns with soft scoop and sweetheart necklines are now a confidence-inspiring choice for many curve brides. Thoughtfully engineered support allows brides to embrace today’s trends without compromising on comfort or fit."

How important is internal construction when designing for curve brides?
"It’s arguably the most important element of the entire gown. Beautiful fabrics and intricate detailing mean very little if the gown doesn’t provide the support a bride needs. The bride should feel supported from the moment she puts the gown on until the last dance. That’s why Portrait gowns are engineered from the inside out, incorporating carefully considered corsetry, supportive boning and expertly balanced pattern cutting that enhances the figure while allowing brides to move comfortably throughout the day."
"Every Portrait gown begins with fit. Inspired by some of Bridal Collective’s most successful couture designs, each style has been thoughtfully reconstructed specifically for curve brides, ensuring every seam, panel and internal detail works in harmony with a bride’s natural shape.
"You’ll also find many of today’s most sought-after bridal details throughout the collection - from contemporary draping and clean crepe silhouettes to dimensional floral lace, shimmering fabrics and beautifully sculpted bodices. Brides shouldn’t have to choose between exceptional fit and high fashion - they deserve both."
What styles are selling particularly well within the Portrait collection right now, and what do you think is driving their popularity?
"We’re seeing two clear directions emerge. The first is clean, sophisticated gowns with beautiful structure and minimal detailing as seen in TOVA. Brides are increasingly drawn to timeless elegance where exceptional fit does the talking. The second is romantic gowns such as TATIANA featuring modern floral lace, soft sparkle and dimensional texture, offering a contemporary take on classic bridal styling. What unites both trends is confidence. Today’s brides want gowns that reflect their personality while making them feel supported, comfortable and completely themselves, and that’s exactly what Portrait was created to deliver."

How can consultants create a more positive styling experience during appointments?
"A positive experience comes down to mirroring the bride’s energy and matching their excitement. Consultants create the best environment when they focus on the celebration of the moment and focus entirely on creating a welcoming, intentional space. When a stylist listens to what makes the bride feel most like themselves and leads with enthusiasm, the entire focus naturally lands on personal style and identity rather than anything else."
What mistakes should boutiques avoid when advising plus size brides?
"The most critical mistake to avoid when advising any bride, including a plus-size bride, is making assumptions. Every bride deserves to be met with an open mind and a blank slate, rather than a predetermined list of biased, outdated style rules. The bride’s personal style and identity should remain the absolute priority throughout the experience."
If you could give bridal consultants one piece of styling advice, what would it be?
"Listen to how the bride feels in the dress before you look at how it fits. True styling is about protecting the bride’s confidence and helping them find a look that aligns with their personality and wedding day vision. When a consultant focuses on guiding the bride toward choices that make them feel powerful, comfortable, and entirely authentic, the rest of the appointment naturally falls into place."
