Heritage with Purpose: Connecting Bridal Tradition with a New Generation

Celebrating their 80th anniversary, the Justin Alexander team speaks about the role heritage plays in connecting with today’s brides, and how their long-established bridal brand continues to evolve for a new generation while remaining true to its roots.

This year marks 80 years of Justin Alexander Group, a milestone that reflects decades of growth, adaptation and enduring relevance. Established long before many of America’s most recognised fashion brands, the brand has successfully navigated changing trends and consumer expectations while staying grounded in the values that shaped its identity from the start.

At the helm today is CEO and Creative Director Justin Warshaw, whose grandparents, Shirley and Ted Warshaw, founded the family business in 1946. As the third generation leading the brand, he believes the brand’s longevity comes down to its ability to embrace change without losing sight of its roots.

Eighty years in bridal is a remarkable milestone! What do you think has allowed Justin Alexander Group to endure when so many bridal brands have disappeared or dramatically changed direction?

Eighty years is a remarkable milestone, and for Justin Alexander Group it represents a steadfast commitment to the fundamentals we have never moved away from: an uncompromising focus on quality, fit, and construction, supported by exceptional customer service and a data-driven understanding of what brides and boutiques truly need.

As a third-generation family business, our heritage in bridal accessories, inclusivity, and female leadership helped shape a company designed to serve real brides rather than fleeting trends, and that philosophy continues to guide us today. I am incredibly proud that, as a company, we support more than 2,000 retail partners across 62 countries, always balancing a global perspective with a deep understanding of local markets.

A key part of our longevity has been our ability to evolve without losing our identity. While we remain known for timeless design and exceptional fit, we have grown into five distinct core brands that meet the diverse needs of the modern bride, alongside luxury licenses including Savannah Miller Bridal and Viktor&Rolf Mariage. For me, that balance between heritage and evolution — honoring what has always worked while adapting to what brides want next — is what has allowed Justin Alexander Group to endure and continue growing through generations of change.

How do you modernise a heritage bridal house without losing the codes and craftsmanship that made brides fall in love with it in the first place?

It’s precisely because Justin Alexander is a heritage bridal house that I believe we are able to carry that passion confidently into the modern world of bridal. I have a deep respect for my family’s history and the generations that came before me, but with each new chapter comes fresh perspectives and strengths that continue to shape the evolution of the brand.

While we remain rooted in the craftsmanship, quality, and timeless design codes that brides have fallen in love with for decades, we also embrace innovation and the ever-changing needs of today’s bride. Supported by an exceptional marketing and design team that stays ahead of emerging trends, I am incredibly proud of the global reputation we have built for outstanding craftsmanship across all of our collections.

Today’s brides seem far more interested in individuality than tradition. How has that shift influenced the way you approach collections and customisation?

I love that brides are increasingly leaning toward individuality rather than tradition. If you can’t be your most authentic self on your wedding day, then when can you?

It’s an exciting time for designers in the bridal industry, and I am personally enjoying the creative freedom to push boundaries, explore new ideas, and develop truly inspiring pieces. Brides today are far more open to experimenting with different looks for their wedding day, which was reflected on the runway at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, where we showcased a number of distinctive designs created with the fashion-forward bride in mind.

Many of your recent bespoke projects (from Mel B to Madeleine White) felt highly personal and expressive. Are brides becoming more confident in treating bridal fashion as an extension of their identity rather than a “bridal uniform”?

I believe a wedding dress should absolutely be an extension of a bride’s identity. Today’s brides are far more comfortable expressing themselves and far less concerned with fitting into a traditional “bridal uniform,” which is a really positive shift for our industry. I often ask brides who they are outside of the boutique, what they are passionate about, and what inspires them, because what they wear on their wedding day should feel like a true reflection of their individuality.

When we design for high-profile brides such as Mel B and Madeleine White, we spend considerable time getting to know them and exploring ideas that feel personal and authentic to who they are. The process is a journey, and the end result must feel meaningful and unique, with the goal of creating a dress that allows each bride to feel like the very best version of herself.

As you celebrate 80 years, what feels more important to the company now: growth, innovation, legacy, or something else?

Looking ahead, we are evolving intentionally with the launch of two new brands this year. Poeza represents a more elevated expression of modern luxury for the refined, quietly confident bride, while Fable by Justin Alexander, our new flower girl collection, celebrates the multigenerational nature of weddings and the role family and tradition continue to play in the bridal journey.

Sustainability is also a major focus for us moving forward, from more responsible logistics to new reforestation initiatives in partnership with organizations such as the National Forest Foundation.
