Tell us about the brand’s history, and why you decided to enter the bridal industry.

The brand has been around for 10 years now, but has really become powerful in the last 5 years. We were named by Harpers Bazaar as one of the top bridal designers in the UK in our 4th year and had mentions in Vogue and other international media companies. We have invested in creating our own unique embroideries, so no other UK brands could compete with our fabrics. We have not only grown in terms of our identity as a brand but also our reach: our website receives views from nearly every single country in the world and our reach on Pinterest has peaked at 1.5-2 million views a month. Bridal couture has always been my main focus for a career: I have been running my business since my early 20’s and went from creating a couture collection at university to working for a couturier to starting my label. I never swayed from designing bridal couture, and I am extremely determined to be the most unique label to come from the UK.

What is Amy Mair Couture’s signature style?

Innovation in texture and layering fabrics. We have statement pieces in our collection which are totally non-conforming and not contemporary: they are pieces of art in the form of clothing.

What is Amy Mair Couture’s greatest achievement, and top secrets to secrets?

Our greatest achievement is how the brand has evolved over the past year. We are now selling internationally, we ship worldwide and receive enquiries from most countries in the world. Our US market is currently bigger than our UK market. The secret to individual success is staying in your own lane: concentrate on what your want to achieve and create something unique. Our style is unique and we strive to create innovative pieces each season, along with achieve Dior quality in making.

What’s next for the brand?

Continue to evolve into a world known brand, and start to sell internationally to more countries than just the US, Canada and Australia. We want to break into the European market and eventually have a flagship store in Paris or Milan.

What are five interesting facts about the brand?

1. As the designer, I carry out every bit of the new collection designs, from fabric sourcing, inspirational mood boards to sketching pattern cutting to making. From a fine art background, I appreciate that inspiration needs to come first before anything else.
2. We have had our last 4 photoshoots close to home in Barry, Wales, even though they look like exotic destinations.
3. We strive to be eco friendly in everything we do: less waste, researching vegan fabrics, recycling and reusing fabrics.
4. We are a family-run business. Myself and my partner are growing the business together while he studies business law and my two little princesses (4 months and 3 years) give me inspiration to achieve big things every day.
5. We have an extremely talented embroiderer that creates exclusive pieces for us, who has previously worked for Alexander McQueen.

What inspired the current collection?

As with every collection, travel and nature is a huge source of inspiration. However, in this collection we have a slightly unique take as our inspiration has come from movement in nature, hence why we have names like ’Shadow’, ’Still’, ’Breeze’ etc and others like ’Sunrise’ and ’Serene’ which are more descriptive words to reflect my emotions when I was designing them. The title is ’Like a Bird’ which is short for the quote, ’Like a Bird Catching the Wind’, free to fly and be carried with the wind which reflects our direction.
