Demetrios: Big Dress Energy!

We talk to Stephanie Lomas of Demetrios about bold and beautiful silhouettes, and why big wedding dress styling is stepping back into the spotlight.

Sleek minimalism and pared-back silhouettes have dominated over the past few years. Beautiful cuts, elegant draping, demure through and through. But recently we have noticed a shift... the statement wedding gown is reclaiming its space. Volume and structure are back – it is time to take up space again in big, bold and beautiful ways!

And, according to Stephanie Lomas of Demetrios, brides are more than ready for it. “We’re definitely seeing a move towards a ‘modern Renaissance’ vibe, blending structured, historical and romantic elements with contemporary touches,” she explains. “After a period of pared-back, simpler designs, it’s so lovely to see bigger, bolder silhouettes making a comeback.”

Cultural impact

Cultural influence plays a huge part in trends, as we know. And what are we seeing right now? Period dramas with costume design in overdrive, sweeping cinematography often with a fashion focussed lens, red carpet looks that are made to create a spectacle, these all feed the collective bridal imagination.

“There’s a reason statement gowns never go out of style – we all love a bit of drama and theatre,” says Stephanie. “Shows like Bridgerton and films like Wuthering Heights have reignited that love for romantic, cinematic gowns and Demetrios really captures that, creating head-turning, statement pieces.”

Couture runways are also having a renewed impact, and not just because of what designers are creating, but because of how accessible those collections now are. Brides aren’t waiting for magazine editorials to trickle down; they’re watching the shows in real time on Instagram and TikTok. The shapes this season, which include sculpted waists, dramatic skirts, and architectural bodices, feel surprisingly translatable.

Modern, not heavy

One of the biggest misconceptions about ‘big dresses’ is that they always feel traditional or overly formal. But according to Demetrios, this isn’t naturally the case: “We keep evolving the big dress by pairing clean lines with fashion-forward structure, luxurious fabrics and unexpected details,” Stephanie says. “The result is drama and impact without feeling heavy or traditional.”

So, in contemporary fashion, the key is all about architectural clarity through precision in the cut and shaping. Plus, the structure has got to take centre stage.“The big trends are drop-waist and Basque-shaped corsets – romantic, flattering and perfect with ballgowns, fit-and-flare, tulle or mermaid styles,” Stephanie explains. “Add draping, sculptural fabrics, or 3D floral details and it instantly feels modern and elevated.”

Of course, today’s brides won’t sacrifice comfort for spectacle, nor should they. “Our gowns are built with lightweight internal structures, soft crinolines, flexible boning and the softest linings,” Stephanie says. “That way, even fuller dresses move beautifully and feel comfortable all day.”

Retail notes

From a boutique perspective, the big dress isn’t just a style to stock, it is a way to help create ‘moments’ in appointments.“Always encourage the bride to try a full ballgown or dramatic silhouette and let her see and feel the movement,” Stephanie advises. “That moment in front of the mirror is pure magic – nothing quite compares to the emotion of seeing yourself in a fuller gown for the first time.”

It’s what stylists call this ‘the swoosh moment.’ Because even if a customer thought they wanted something slimline, that mirror reveal can completely shift the direction. “Big gowns are real showstoppers,” Stephanie says. “They create theatre on the shop floor, grab attention and get people talking. Even if it’s not the final choice, a ‘wow’ gown makes your boutique feel memorable and exciting.”
